Roger L. Blaine, Ph.D., regulatory affairs manager at TA Instruments in New Castle, Del., a worldwide supplier of thermal analysis and rheology equipment, has been elected to a term on the ASTM International Board of Directors.
Blaine's ASTM involvement began more than 30 years ago: he joined the Society in 1973 and that year was a founding member of Committee E37 on Thermal Measurements. He continues to serve the committee as the current chair of Subcommittee E37.01 on Thermal and Rheological Test Methods and Practices, and on many other E37 subcommittees.
Over the years, he has added to his broad knowledge of ASTM work through his extensive participation in other ASTM committees, including D02 on Petroleum Products and Lubricants, D04 on Road and Paving Materials, D09 on Electrical and Electronic Insulating Materials, D11 on Rubber, D20 on Plastics, D30 on Composite Materials, D32 on Catalysts, D35 on Geosynthetics, E13 on Molecular Spectroscopy and Chromatography, E27 on Hazard Potential of Chemicals, F04 on Medical and Surgical Materials and Devices, and F40 on Declarable Substances in Materials. He has also worked on C11 on Gypsum and Related Building Materials and Systems, and served on the Committee on Technical Committee Operations. For his ASTM service, Blaine received the Award of Merit and accompanying title of fellow in 1982 and a Committee D20 Award of Appreciation in 2000.
Throughout his career, Blaine has worked on the applications of thermal analysis, and standards and reference materials for thermal analysis and rheometry; he has dozens of journal articles, patents, and books to his credit in the field of thermal analysis and applications.
After Blaine earned his Ph.D. in analytical chemistry in 1969 from Oregon State University, he joined the staff of the DuPont Company in Wilmington, Del., as an analytical chemist. Blaine worked for DuPont in laboratory and product positions until 1990. He joined TA Instruments in 1990 as an applications development manager, and he became a senior scientist at the company before assuming his current position.
Blaine is a member of the American Chemical Society, the International Conference on Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry, the North American Thermal Analysis Society, and the Thermal Analysis Forum of the Delaware Valley. NATAS has honored Blaine with the NATAS Fellow Award.
