New Standard on Thermal Spraying Fills Void in Zinc and Tin Alloy Industry
ASTM International Committee B02 on Nonferrous Metals and Alloys recently approved a new standard, B 943, Specification for Zinc and Tin Alloy Wire Used in Thermal Spraying for Electronic Applications. This standard fills a critical need in the global electronics industry.
Subcommittee B02.04 on Zinc and Cadmium developed B 943 because no specification existed that globally covered zinc alloy and/or tin alloy wire used for thermal spraying applications in the electronics industry. Primary applications for the standard are for capacitors and other electronic devices.
"For the first time, users and potential users will have the alloys for these applications listed in one place along with their specifications for each alloy," says Richard F. Lynch, chair of Subcommittee B02.04. "This will facilitate both an awareness for the use of zinc and tin alloys for thermal spraying and provide the critical information needed to specify these materials to both users and producers."
B 943 will be used by electronic manufacturers, specifiers and users around the world, including in the growing manufacturing and user base in Asia and Europe. Because of the global reach of B 943, Lynch says that Subcommittee B02.04 is hoping for worldwide participation in future revisions of B 943, as well as two other related standards under the subcommittees jurisdiction, B 833, Specification for Zinc and Zinc Alloy Wire for Thermal Spraying (Metallizing), and B 907, Specification for Zinc, Tin and Cadmium Base Alloys Used as Solders and for Thermal Spraying.
