A new ASTM International subcommittee on reliability (E11.40) is developing a standard (WK58249, Guide for Reliability) that will support reliability and risk analysis. The new subcommittee is part of ASTM International’s committee on quality and statistics (E11).
“Reliability means quality over time, and many industries need reliability estimates and analysis of materials, components, and systems,” says ASTM International member Stephen N. Luko, an Engineering Fellow at UTC Aerospace Systems. “Risk analysis is also a key topic on everyone’s mind.”
Luko notes that many managers and technical professionals need help with the analysis of observational and field data as well as with test planning. These issues, along with terminology related to reliability, are covered in the proposed guide from the new group.
The guide could be used by engineers, managers, technical professionals, material scientists, quality and reliability engineers, and other concerned with reliability and risk. Future standards on specific reliability methods are also planned.
Luko encourages all interested parties to join the subcommittee to help develop reliability standards.
