All interested parties, particularly those involved with utilities, are encouraged to participate in the development of a proposed new ASTM International standard, ASTM WK39660, Practice for Procedures to Prevent Contamination in Plastic Gas Pipe and Fittings. The proposed standard is being developed by Subcommittee F17.60 on Gas, part of ASTM International Committee F17 on Plastic Piping Systems.
According to Karen Lively, technical manager for Performance Pipe, a division of Chevron Phillips Chemical Co., current industry initiatives led by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration emphasize the Distribution Integrity Management Program, which addresses issues with existing pipelines. ASTM WK39660, on the other hand, represents a forward move of quality practices for the production of new plastic piping systems.
“The proposed new standard would provide specific guidance to manufacturers of new piping systems,” says Lively. “It would also provide a tool for utilities to improve supplier quality requirements, and standardizes those requirements.”
ASTM WK39660 will apply to gas distribution systems produced primarily from polyethylene as well as other plastic types that are used in mechanical fittings for polyethylene pipelines.
“Once it is approved, utility companies will be able to use the proposed standard to specify requirements for vendors supplying piping systems,” notes Lively. “ASTM WK39660 could become a key part of the assurance utilities provide their customers that the gas supplied to their homes and businesses passes through quality pipe products.” In addition, Lively says that regulatory bodies will be able to use the proposed standard by referencing its requirements in regulations.
