Paul H. Shipp, Ph.D., principal research associate at USG Corp. in Libertyville, Ill., has received the ASTM International Award of Merit and title of fellow for his contributions to Committee E05 on Fire Standards. The Award of Merit is ASTM’s highest organizational recognition for individual contributions to standards activities.
An ASTM International member since 1987, Shipp is a past chairman of Committee E05 and currently leads Subcommittee E05.37 on Honors, Awards and Nominations. In addition to his work on E05, Shipp is a member of Committees C11 on Gypsum and Related Building Materials and Systems; C16 on Thermal Insulation; D01 on Paint and Related Coatings, Materials and Applications; E06 on Performance of Buildings; E37 on Thermal Measurements; E60 on Sustainability; and G03 on Weathering and Durability. He also served a term on the ASTM board of directors from 2007-2009 and was chairman of the finance and audit committee in 2010.
Shipp joined USG Corp. in 1988 as program manager for the Construction Systems Laboratory and became principal research associate in 2007. In that role, he advises research and operating management on strategic issues, trends and developments related to building products, codes and standards. He also directs research for major projects.
Prior to USG Corp., Shipp was manager of the Department of Energy’s Roof Research Center at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Oak Ridge, Tenn., and a senior engineer in the Energy Research Laboratory at Owens-Corning Fiberglas Corp. in Granville, Ohio.
Outside ASTM International, Shipp is a member ASHRAE and ASME International. He helped create the nonprofit Responsible Solutions to Mold Coalition for the construction industry, and he served as the coalition’s secretary and technical advisor from 2006-2012. Author of numerous papers related to his technical expertise, Shipp is a professional engineer in the state of Ohio.
A graduate of Southern Methodist University, Dallas, Texas, where he earned a B.S. in mechanical engineering, Shipp also holds an M.S. and a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.
