Jordan Institution for Standards and Metrology Adopts ASTM International Standards
The Jordan Institution for Standards and Metrology (JISM) reports that they have adopted and referenced several ASTM International standards over the past year. JISM and ASTM signed a memorandum of understanding in 2005.
As Jordan’s national standards body, JISM works to enhance confidence in services and national products through the development and implementation of systems that are compatible with best international practices in the fields of standardization, metrology, conformity assessment, market surveillance, accreditation and knowledge management in cooperation with stakeholders.
JISM adopted 18 ASTM International standards as identical standards this year and used 61 ASTM standards as referenced documents in the development of Jordanian national standards and building codes. More than 20 individuals from Jordan participate in standards development on ASTM Committees C09 on Concrete and Concrete Aggregates; D01 on Paint and Related Coatings, Materials and Applications; D19 on Water; and F02 on Flexible Barrier Packaging.
“The MOU between ASTM International and JISM helps support the development of Jordanian standards. ASTM standards have been extensively referenced and used as the basis of several Jordanian standards,” says Dr. Yaseen Khayaat, director general of JISM. He also mentions the success of the 2009 cement and concrete training program that was held in Amman, Jordan, as another benefit of the MOU. ASTM International offers its technical and professional training programs to several national standards bodies at a minimal cost.
Initiated in 2001, ASTM International's MOU program promotes communication between ASTM International and national standards bodies worldwide, fostering awareness of the standardization systems of all parties involved. The purpose of the program is to increase greater worldwide participation in the ASTM standards development process and facilitate the development of national standards that will aid health, safety, and environmental and economic conditions.
