Dr. Jack S. Brenizer Jr., J. ‘Lee’ Everett Professor of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering and chairman of the nuclear engineering program at the Pennsylvania State University, University Park, Pa., has received the Award of Merit from ASTM International. The Award of Merit and its accompanying title of fellow is the highest organizational recognition for individual contributions to ASTM standards activities.
Brenizer was cited “for exemplary technical and administrative leadership and contributions to Committee E07 on Nondestructive Testing, leading to global adoption of ASTM International standards on neutron radiology.”
A member of ASTM International for 25 years, Brenizer has served as chair of Committee E07 since 2006 and works on several E07 subcommittees. During his tenure with the committee, he has provided technical evaluation and managed the round robin testing of numerous standards on radiology (neutron) methods. For his many contributions over the years, E07 has recognized him with three certificates of appreciation and the Charles W. Briggs Award.
A graduate of Shippensburg University, Shippensburg, Pa., where he received a B.A. in physics, Brenizer received an M.E. in engineering sciences and his Ph.D. in nuclear engineering from the Pennsylvania State University.
Before joining the faculty at his alma mater in 1999, Brenizer was a professor of mechanical and nuclear engineering at the University of Virginia for 17 years. An active academic in producing engineers with graduate degrees related to neutron imaging technology, he teaches courses in radiation interaction with matter, radiation dosimetry and radiation detection. He is actively involved in research in the areas of radiation detection, neutron radiography and imagining, and neutron activation analysis, and he has authored more than 50 journal articles on nondestructive testing.
In addition to ASTM International, Brenizer is a member of the American Nuclear Society, the Health Physics Society, Sigma Xi, the American Society for Nondestructive Testing, the American Society for Engineering Education and the International Society for Neutron Radiography.
