Steven M. Cramer, Ph.D., P.E., associate dean of academic affairs and professor of civil engineering at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wis., has been elected chairman of ASTM International Committee D07 on Wood. The committee includes approximately 275 members who are responsible for 116 standards related to timber, wood and wood products.
Cramer lives in Lodi, Wis.
In addition to his work as associate dean and as a professor, Cramer has served as the director of the Wisconsin Structures and Materials Testing Laboratory. His research interests and experience encompass structural materials testing and behavior, lumber strength and grading, metal-plate connected wood trusses analysis and design, wood assembly structural performance, performance of structures subject to fire, and concrete materials performance and durability.
Author of more than 90 publications, Cramer serves as a reviewer for several professional journals. He has received a number of teaching awards and has supervised approximately 60 graduate level degree students. Cramer also participates in the work of numerous professional organizations, including the American Lumber Standard Committee of the U.S. Department of Commerce, the American National Standards Institute, the American Wood Council's Wood Design Standards Committee, the Forest Products Society, the Society of Wood Science and Technology, the American Society for Engineering Education, the American Society of Civil Engineers and Structural Engineering Institute, the Truss Plate Institute, the Wood Truss Council of America's Engineering Review Committee, and the American Concrete Institute.
Cramer, who holds three patents, has a B.S. in civil and environmental engineering (structures) from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and his M.S. and Ph.D. in civil engineering (structures - solid mechanics) from Colorado State University in Fort Collins.
